Fieldwork stories: When humans go out the animals have a party!

Text by Juliana Teixeira

Inside the Brasília National Park, the tourists who visit the park can access two natural swimming pools during the day (9 am to 4 pm). Since we were researches working inside the National Park, we were allowed to use the swimming pools before and after the public open hours until the last daylight (around 5:30 p.m.).

After a long workday, we went to one of the swimming pools to relax. We came to swim at 4 pm and the swimming pool was crowded. After 45 minutes, when all the tourists left the place and we were quiet for 15 minutes, we noticed a movement coming from the natural vegetation around the swimming pool. We kept quiet and static and, in some minutes, the first animals showed up. It started with three Coatis. They looked around all the open area and after some calls more them 15 Coatis showed up making a lot of noise. Behind us, the monkeys started to jump out the threes as different birds were flying over our heads. It was an amazing experience seeing the animal’s behaviors after all the humans left the place. We were present at a native party with no invitation!
